Message from the Williamsburg Public Library
February 21, 2013
It has come to our attention that bit torrent software that we put on our computer system is blocking a number of websites our patrons are interested in. The Williamsburg Public Library has never set out to purposely filter content and, in fact, is adverse to filtering content. We are distressed to find this software is filtering. That was never its purpose. We added the software to our system because the library has been the victim of illegal downloading which, had it continued, could have ended our relationship with Mediacom, our internet provider, who is kind enough to provide the library with internet service at no charge. We will be taking steps to remedy the situation so that all internet sites are available to our patrons no matter what the content which has always been the intention of the Williamsburg Public Library.
Great News about the Williamsburg Public Library Building
February 5, 2013
The Williamsburg Public Library has recently been informed that our new building has achieved LEED Gold certification.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a program that provides third-party verification of green buildings. From individual buildings and homes, to entire neighborhoods and communities, LEED is transforming the way built environments are designed, constructed, and operated.
Why LEED matters:LEED-certified buildings are designed to:• Lower operating costs and increase asset value• Reduce waste sent to landfills• Conserve energy and water• Be healthier and safer for occupants• Reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions• Qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances and other incentives in hundreds of citiesOur community should be especially proud because our building is only the third library in Iowa to achieve this recognition. The other two libraries to be recognized as LEED Gold Certified buildings are the Drake Community Library in Grinnell and the Marshalltown Public Library. In fact, since the beginning of the LEED Rating System, only 8 libraries in Iowa have become LEED Certified at any level. |
