Williamsburg Public Library
Williamsburg LEED Presentation
August 12, 2013
The Williamsburg Public Library was officially awarded its gold LEED certification in a presentation at the library. Bruce Hamous, who is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council-Iowa Chapter, presented the award to the Williamsburg Public Library Board of Trustees. The event was open to the public.
Hamous was a member of the team from OPN Architects, Cedar Rapids, who designed the new library building. He gave a short program about the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program.
The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for the improved environmental and human health performance.
The certification of the Williamsburg Public Library indicates that the building has met a number of criteria making it energy efficient and environmentally sound which includes lower operating costs, conservation of energy and water and creation of a healthier and safer environment for occupants.
There are four levels of LEED certification – certified, silver, gold and platinum. The library’s original goal was to be certified at the silver level. That goal was written into the contract with VisionIowa, who provided a $600,000 grant for the library’s construction. The Williamsburg Public Library was the first in which the VisionIowa board asked that a certain level of LEED certification be obtained.
The Williamsburg Public Library is one of only three gold LEED libraries in Iowa and one of only eight libraries in the state who have earned LEED certification at any level. The other two gold libraries are Marshalltown Public Library and the Drake Community Library in Grinnell.
